A group show titled “Body and Soul,” curated by artist Kathleen Spicer, opens at the LOFT Gallery in Narrowsburg on Friday, September 12, with an artist’s reception from 7– 9 p.m. The exhibit will be on view through October 4.

“The body tells a story. How that story is read is unique to each person,” says artist and curator Kathleen Spicer who has gathered the work of seven artists for the LOFT Gallery exhibit “Body and Soul.” “I selected artists that tell their stories in unique ways certain to stir the imagination and make the viewer dig deeper and question the story. Here’s the body, the soul is in the work and in the interpretation.”

Each artist handles the human figure in a uniquely soulful way through the use of non-traditional materials or techniques. Several of the artists are established in the Upper Delaware region and will be premiering new works. Other artists have been gathered from New York City, Philadelphia, and Arizona. Artists represented in the show include Robert Colescott, Joan Glase, Jeanne Jaffe, Songyi Kim, Matt Pozorski, Ruth Rodriguez, and Barbara Zweig.

Spicer describes how her work as a visual artist influenced her in curating this program: “As an artist and some time curator I work abstractly and most of the shows I have curated have leaned toward abstract work.” She was first struck by the idea of a show examining the relationship between the body and soul when she read of the controversy around sculptor Matt Pozorski’s work. “A large carved wood ‘angel’ piece was on display and both writers and viewers were split on whether it was ‘indecent’ because it was a nude. I wondered if Michelangelo faced the same issues. I realized that the figure stirs instant response and interpretation.”

The exhibit, free and open to the public, is sponsored by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY, and is made possible in part with funding from the Visual Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts.

Alliance and LOFT Galleries are located at the Delaware Arts Center at 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg, NY. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the exhibit call 845-252-7576.
