“Denial,” an exhibit of silk screen and linoleum block prints by Joyce Ellen Weinstein opens with a reception on Saturday, February 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Alliance Gallery at the Delaware Arts Center in Narrowsburg, NY. The exhibit will be on view through March 17, 2012.

The works of Joyce Ellen Weinstein—a New York City native who recently moved to Milford, PA—are concerned with the understanding of human relationships, beginning with ourselves and extending outward to include family, community, ethnicity, and nationality.

While at an artist’s residency in Vilnius, Lithuania, Weinstein observed a group of employees practicing trusting and bonding exercises with a facilitator to foster better workplace relationships. “Some people were blindfolded and others actually walked on tight ropes attached high up on the trees. I took many photos because it was so intriguing,” Weinstein recalls. When Weinstein returned home, the photos triggered a series of linoleum block prints.

The resulting body of work—limited edition, hand-pulled, linoleum block prints—is a natural extension of the work Weinstein has been creating for many years: works whose theme is based on censorship, de-humanization, anonymity, racism, anti-Semitism, and violence.

“The idea of allowing oneself to be manipulated while blindfolded did not suggest to me the trust that this activity was supposed to engender,” Weinstein says, “but instead domination, self-sacrifice, and passivity.”

Weinstein received her MFA from the City College of New York and has received fellowships to Mishkenot Sha’ananim, Jerusalem, Israel; Blue Mountain Art Center, New York State; and Europos Parkas Museum of the Center of Europe, Vilnius, Lithuania. Her works are in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; Hebrew Union Institute of Religion Museum, NYC; The Florida Holocaust Museum; Gallerie-Junge  KunstWerkStart, Vienna, Austria; The Social-Cultural Center, Prague, Czech Republic; Amnesty International; and many private collections.

This exhibit, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY.
