The exhibit will be on view through September 17, 2011. “In my work, internalized experiences rewrite themselves in the physical attributes of the external self and are revealed through gesture, facial expression, demeanor, stance, and attitude,” says Nancy Palubniak who works across disciplines to produce 2D and 3D pieces to explore issues related to domestic violence towards women. A freelance photographer for over 30 years, Palubniak recently completed her MFA in painting at the City University of New York (CUNY). Her work utilizes collage, painting, papier-mâché, printmaking, drawing, and photography. “Some of my work goes beyond concepts and themes relating to domestic violence, extending to other problems facing women, such as accepted cultural values that impinge on a woman’s freedoms,” she explains. Palubniak often draws female figures layered with textures of common household furnishings, such as wood-grain interior doors and patterned wallpaper, because, she says “they can be seen as relating to the interior, domestic space, and provide a location to begin considering the work.” Palubniak currently teaches drawing at the City College of New York and splits her time between New York City and Rilleyville, PA. This exhibit, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY, and is made possible in part with funding from the Visual Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. Alliance Gallery is located at the Delaware Arts Center at 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg, NY.
