"
Just... Air"
In the Loft Gallery

“Just… Air”—an exhibition of work by eight artists who chart atmosphere through photography, mixed media, installation, and painting—opens at the Loft Gallery at the Delaware Arts Center in Narrowsburg, NY on Friday, July 29, with a reception from 7–9 p.m. The show, curated by Dale Emmart and Karen Bell, will be on view through August 20.

The concept of ‘Just… Air’ began as painter Dale Emmart and photographer Karen Bell started comparing and combining the images of peers that discuss the sky and air in metaphor. Sandy Gellis’ work combines etchings of turkey vulture flight sequences combined with inkjet images. Tina Hutchings’ iconic, minimal maritime collages reflect upon the effect of barometric air pressure in and around her Bermuda home. Arthur Levine makes paintings that float manmade machines in fields of blue marks influenced by cinematic lighting. Glenn Lieberman’s photographs from an express train window in France use time and density of atmosphere to capture the weight of air compounded by speed. Esther Podemski transfers photographic images of industrial exhaust clouds and migratory bird patterns into skillfully wrought drawings. Linda Stillman maintains a diary of daily sky portraits as a meditative discipline of observation. Her installations infer the particular and unique with memory, clarity, and repetition. Air is the common denominator.

Bell has photographed the environment for many years in all phases of existence—full blush of beauty and shortly after major disasters. In every effort she has sought the particular beauty, the hope, the future of what she was seeing. Photographing the sky with a Polaroid camera she instantly captures a fleeting moment in time.

Emmart has been a plein air painter since coming to northeastern Pennsylvania 20 years ago. After seeing Constables’ notable sketches in London, sky portraits have occupied her summer paintings. Beyond the sky sketches, Emmart uses ideas of vastness in landscape, natural phenomenon, and the scrutiny of popcorn blasts in her eclectic selection of paintings.
