“Family Matters,” an exhibit of paintings by Peter Greene opens with a reception on Saturday, March 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Alliance Gallery at the Delaware Arts Center in Narrowsburg, NY. The exhibit will be on view through April 14, 2012.
“Life has been rich, built around a family whose stories continue to permeate my work,” says painter Peter Greene. For over 30 years, he has been portraying family life through his paintings. Whether depicting a child teasing a cat or a father playing a game with a toddler, Greene’s narrative paintings explore parent/child dynamics, marital roles, and generational identities of family members. Many of the paintings are set in sparse, dreamy interiors full of shadows and ochre tones.
Trained as an abstract painter in New York City, Greene says, “The likeness of a character is secondary to a sense of the character’s condition or state of mind. I am more interested in a narrative that examines how the world feels than the details of how it looks. The limited figurative drawing skills that I possessed turned out to be a gift rather than a burden. My inability to refine figures quickly results in my having more time discover my narrative.”
After becoming a husband and father, the New York native and his family moved to California where he received his master’s degree at San Jose State University during which time he was a teaching assistant in the printmaking department. After graduating Greene taught painting and drawing at two community colleges and regularly showed his work on the west coast. The family then returned to New York where he and his wife started a design firm that early on adopted Internet technologies.
“I was an consistent part time painter,” he recalls. Since 1992, Greene and his wife Hester have spent weekends at their cottage in Damascus, PA. After five years, with a body of work that reflected this life change, Greene accepted the offer of a solo show at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance.
In recent years Greene retired from city life. He built himself a studio and now paints full time for the first time in his life. “Being in the studio full time has resulted in a body of new work,” he says, “During the last 15 years I have by choice exhibited only in local group shows. Once again I am lucky enough to be offered a solo show at the DVAA. Living and working in this community that is so supportive of the arts has allowed me to be more productive than I have been at any other juncture in my life.”
This exhibit, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY and is made possible in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
