Facebook, digital surveillance, iPhones, HDTV: it’s a digital world we live in. As our homes, our work, and our lives goes digital, DIGit Digital Media Exposition in Narrowsburg, NY helps us make sense of it. The sixth annual event takes place June 1214, 2009 at various locations throughout Narrowsburg and includes continuous screenings, installation art, workshops and discussions, and a competitive video slam.
The DIGit 2009 theme is Open Source Culture. The event will considerthrough screenings and workshopsthe use of digital media for political and social change, storytelling, and empowerment.
The event kicks off Friday, June 12 from 79 p.m. with an opening reception and video screenings at the Delaware Arts Center at 37 Main Street. Looped screenings featuring digital works by artists from far and near will continue over the weekend and remain on display through July 4.
On Saturday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Narrowsburg Roasters will host “Java with the Geniuses” an open discussion for all to bring your technical questionsfrom how to download a picture to how to start a website. Next door at the Arts Center, a series of workshops and panel discussions will explore topics including “Digital Storytelling” at 11 a.m.; “Using Digital Media to Affect Political and Social Change” at 1 p.m.; and “Free Software: Open Source Culture” at 2 p.m.
Then, at 7 p.m. the Excellence in Digital Art awards will be announced after a screening of the digital videos at the Tusten Theatre at 210 Bridge Street. Over $2000 in cash prizes will be awarded.
Starting at 9 p.m., Video in the Built Environment features outdoor projections throughout Narrowsburg's Main Street, Bridge, and Tusten Theatre parking lot. Visiting video artists include Conrad Gleber, Mat Rappaport, Ivan Martinez, and Grant Taylor.
Throughout the weekend, artists of all skill levels are invited to make their own 3-minute “Quick and Gritty” digital movie. The short videos will be screened on Sunday, June 14 at 12 p.m, at “video slam” at the Tusten Theatre. A jury of judges will award a $500 grand prize. Other prizes will also be awarded.
