2009 Grant Recipient

Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, announces photographer Joyce Baronio of Narrowsburg, NY as the 2009 recipient of a $2,500 Artists in the Community grant, a grant category funded through the Decentralization Program (DEC) of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Artists in the Community was developed by NYSCA to support highly accomplished artists in creating new and significant work.

In keeping with DEC’s commitment to community involvement, the grant requires a segment of the community to participate in some way in the creative process. Baronio’s proposed project, “The Future of Our Land: Women Speak Out,” will entail the creation of a black and white photographic essay and transcribed interviews with women farmers in Sullivan County and the prospect of gas drilling in the area.

Baronio received her MFA from Yale University studying with Walker Evans. For the past decade, she has been working on photography as a medium to unite figure and landscape.
